A NURSE'S STORY

Nurse Alice Windle

Nurse Alice Windle

Alice Windle (born May 1st, 1862, Chippendale) was the daughter of Alfred Windle (convict) and Caroline Mary Ann Rooke. She was the youngest of 12 children.

During the 1860’s Alice’s moved with her family to Coogee, where she and some of her siblings lived their whole lives.

Alice trained as a nurse and worked at both the Coast and Sydney hospitals. It is known that Alice was at the Coast hospital in 1885, but it is not known for how long she stayed working there.

Alice’s sister Grace was also a nurse, but it is unknown where she worked. There is a good chance that Grace too worked at both hospitals.

Alice never married but she did foster a child from Western Australia.

She died July 9th, 1949.
